Astragalus, known also as (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, also known as an adaptogen for its ability to strengthen the body and provide support for those diagnosed with a disease, such as heart disease, high cholesterol and its ability to provide support to the immune system. Astragalus contains antioxidants and studies have shown that it contains antiviral properties which may help prevent colds. Astragalus may also be helpful for wound healing and recovery.
This plant is a perennial plant, meaning it lives over two years and is mostly found in the northern and eastern parts of China. The root of the astragalus plant is where all the nutrients are held and is known as the medicinal part of the plant. According to studies conducted by the University of Maryland Medical Center, astragalus has been used to treat: anemia, colds, diabetes, fatigue and lack of appetite from chemotherapy, heart disease, hepatitis kidney disease, seasonal allergies and cancer where they found in preliminary studies suggesting “astragalus may have anti-tumor effects, specifically against melanoma and leukemia.”Resources
